Fatal Rectal Bleeding after Prostate Biopsy

چکیده
Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided biopsy of the prostate is a gold-standard for diagnosing the prostatic cancer. It is a relatively less invasive technique and known to be fast, safe, and effective method, because post biopsy complications including gross hematuria, rectal bleeding, hematospermia, fever and chill are mostly self-limiting and the rate of major complications are low. Rare major complications include acute prostatitis, acute urinary retention, epididymitis, severe hematuria, sepsis, abscess formation, urinary tract infection, tumor tracking, vasovagal syncope, and significant rectal bleeding. 2) A nation-wide survey in Japan reported that the 5.9% of 212,065 men undergone rectal bleeding after the procedure. And a large prospective series of prostatic biopsies showed the 8.2% of patients reported moderate to severe rectal bleeding after the biopsy. Chiang et al. reported that the rate of rectal bleeding needed hospitalization is 0.2%. The major ones occur very rarely but if they occur, it could be life-threatening. We herein present an autopsy case of fatal rectal bleeding after prostate biopsy to share how we handle this rare case and review the reported similar cases by analyzing the papers.

Severe Life Threatening Rectal Bleed After Prostate Biopsy Requiring Angiographic Therapy: A Case Report
Rectal bleeding is often seen in patients who undergo transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. It is usually mild and stops spontaneously. We report what we believe is the first case of life threatening rectal bleeding following this procedure which was successfully treated with angiographic embolization. An endoscopic injection of epinephrine done on admission achieved only temporary hem...
متن کاملComplication rates after prostate biopsy according to the number of sampled cores
INTRODUCTION A PROSTATE BIOPSY CAN RESULT IN SUCH COMPLICATIONS AS: hematuria, rectal bleeding, pain in hypogastrium, perineum or urethra, fever, nausea, vomiting, retention of urine or other adverse events. The aim of this research was to estimate complication rates after a prostate biopsy based on the number of cores. MATERIAL AND METHODS The complication rate was evaluated on the basis of ...

CONTEXT Prostate biopsy is commonly performed for cancer detection and management. The benefits and risks of prostate biopsy are germane to ongoing debates about prostate cancer screening and treatment. OBJECTIVE To perform a systematic review of complications from prostate biopsy. متن کاملProstatic biopsy-related rectal bleeding refractory to medical and endoscopic therapy definitively managed by catheter-directed embolotherapy: a case report
INTRODUCTION Ultrasound-guided transrectal prostatic biopsy is generally a well-tolerated radiological technique with low overall complication ratio. If post-biopsy rectal bleeding occurs, conservative management is effective in the majority of cases. Endoscopic or interventional treatment is rarely required. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of an 82-year-old white man presenting with mas...
متن کاملComplications of transrectal ultrasound-guided 12-core prostate biopsy: a single center experience with 2049 patients.
OBJECTIVE Currently, transrectal ultrasound-guided (TRUS) systematic prostate biopsy is the standard procedure in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Although TRUS-guided prostate biopsy is a safe method, it is an invasive procedure that is not free from complications. In this prospective study we evaluated the complications of a TRUS-guided 12-core prostate biopsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS The stu...
